ABOUT
I paint in the abstract to expand Levinas's theories of self and home. He postulates a person identifies with their space through the objects they adorn and surround themselves with. Those objects are extensions of the person: manifestations of their identity creating their concept of self and home.
I infuse Levinas's ideologies with Kandisnky's theories in "Concerning the Spiritual in Art." My paintings need to be conscious their expression of a home’s inner sound: "Yet, as the object Is not perceived but merely named, the hearer receives an abstract impression of the de-materialized object. - Kandsisnky" Similarly, a person identifying with objects in a space fabricate their sense of home and self. Their concept of the latter is a deconstructed impression of the identifying object. My paintings' forms are expressions of the inner sound, abstracted images of the home in large swathes of color. The forms are symbols that narrate the painting while the color is its soul.
My paintings become vessels for the viewer to transmute their idea of self into a space. Shapes found in my natural movements and refined color knowledge create a microcosm in which the viewer is able to identify. Using images of their current home, paintings come to fruition. Color palettes draw from what is located in the home so the works expand from the canvas to the exterior walls. The viewer spreads their sense of self throughout the space: the painting is a mirror in which they can extend themselves into the home. My paintings aim to bring the viewer back into their primordial state of dwelling, to exist presently in their home.
