浄土寺の子どもたち
Bridge Studio presents the summer chapter—the finale of August Henry’s four-season exhibition series.
Based between New York City and Kyoto, interdisciplinary maker August works across painting, drawing, textiles, furniture, and installation. For this exhibition, August brings together oil paint, watercolor, crayon, ink, writing, glass, fabric, and blue sheet to capture the heat, sounds, colors, and sensations of summer in Jōdoji in 2026. Daimonjiyama, nyūdōgumo clouds, playgrounds, and storefronts become something like a fairy tale, seen through the eyes of a child. A limited palette of saturated red, blue, and yellow preserves this sense of childlike wonder. The blue sheet holds a special place in the exhibition. Used throughout the construction of August’s childhood home and Bridge Studio, it protected floors, covered wounds, and created a temporary stage for making. Its blue evokes water, the summer ritual of suikawari, and the repeated summers of childhood. Here, the mental landscapes of August’s youth in rural America meet their present life as a maker beneath Daimonjiyama—a space between memory and everyday life, childhood and adulthood, America and Kyoto. August Henryによる四季の展覧会シリーズの最終章となる夏の展示「浄土寺の子供たち（Jōdoji-no-Kodomotachi）」。 New York Cityと京都を拠点に活動するインターディシプリナリーアーティスト、August Henryは、絵画、ドローイング、テキスタイル、家具、インスタレーションなど、さまざまな素材と技法を横断しながら、home、care、community、そして記憶について制作しています。今回の展示では、油彩、水彩、クレヨン、インク、文字、ガラス、布、ブルーシートなどを用い、2026年の夏、浄土寺で過ごした時間そのものを作品へと変換しました。 大文字山、入道雲、公園、店先——Augustが浄土寺の風景のなかに見つけた、どこかおとぎ話のような瞬間。 鮮やかな赤、青、黄色に限定された色彩は、子どもの頃の世界にあるような「wonder」を呼び戻します。水彩による作品は、Hand Saw Pressから刊行された初めての絵本『Welcome Home, Hinoki』にもつながっています。 なかでも印象的なのが、今回繰り返し登場するブルーシート。Bridge Studioの改修と、かつての「子ども時代の家」の建設に携わるなかで、床を守り、傷を覆い、ものづくりの場をつくるために使われてきた素材です。Augustにとってその青は、水のようでもあり、夏のスイカ割りの舞台のようでもあり、繰り返される夏の記憶そのものでもあります。 アメリカの田舎で過ごした幼少期の精神的な風景と、現在、大文字山のふもとで暮らし、つくる日々。二つの時間と場所が重なり合いながら、「浄土寺の子供たち」は、夏の熱、音、光、そして雲を眺めて過ごす時間を描き出します。 四季を通してBridge Studioで展開してきたAugust Henryのシリーズ、その最後の季節を、夏の終わりと共にお楽しみください。
